50 years of Nikon F-mount – Nikkor-S 5.8 cm f/1.4 vs. Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G
11. Summary
As this isn’t a typical lens test, we won’t be listing pros and cons of the tested appliances. However, if we make a comparison, so a kind of a duel, it’s worth to point out the winner. We won’t waste time on a complicated system of grades, but for one test category we’ll give 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw. The older lens wasn’t easily beaten, as it lost the game with final score 6:10.
However, the facts are brutal for it. Its purchase is only justified collector’s wise. The prices it’s offered in oscillate around 300 $. For specimens in good shape, fully equipped i.e. with original caps and lens hood (a collector should be interested in such sets) you need to pay even more. And here we enter the price level of Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4 G which costs less than 500 $. If, then, we’re only interested in the image quality and convenience of work, we need to buy the new model. The situation is different, though, if we’re interested in communing with the history of photography and membership in the exclusive circle of 30 thousand owners of this very interesting lens.
