50 years of Nikon F-mount – Nikkor-S 5 cm f/2 vs. Nikkor AF 50 mm f/1.8D

5. Chromatic aberration

The constructors of old lenses were very careful about the horizontal chromatic aberration correction. The Nikkor-S 5.6 cm f/1.4 showed almost zero level of that aberration and the same story we’ve got in the case of the Nikkor-S 5 cm f/2.0, which can be seen in the chart below very clearly.

At no aperture the aberration reaches more than a very insignificant level of 0.02% which is an exemplary performance. The newer Nikkor AF 1.8/50 fares a bit worse although also in its case we don’t have any reason for complaining. On stopping down the aberration level is low and near the maximum aperture - on the low and medium borderline.
