Just before PMA fair 2008 most of the companies announced launches of their new products. Nikon was not an exception here – they showed a D60 reflex camera and three new lenses, with a Nikkor AF-S DX 16-85 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR among them.

That way Nikon made another step in enlarging its universal lenses offer aimed at amateur photographers. Currently the company presents its customers with the widest choice in this class. We have at our disposal: a new, stabilized “kit” lens 18-55 VR, a classic 18-70 mm, a bit less solid 18-135 mm and a megazoom 18-200 VR. Nikon noticed quite accurately that all these lenses are equivalents of 27 mm and amateurs certainly would greet a standard lens starting with the equivalent of 24 mm. So far the only lens of that type, designed to work on a DX sensor, has been a not very good Tokina 16-50 f/2.8

The fact, that the competitors have also started to offer instruments of this type was not without any significance – e.g. a Sony 16-105 mm, a Zeiss 16-80 mm or an Olympus 12-60 mm have been launched recently. Nikon gave as good as it got and launched a Nikkor AF-S DX 16-85 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR model, equipped with stabilization.
