Tokina AT-X DX AF 16.5-135 mm f/3.5-5.6

1. Introduction

Originally posted 2010-02-02 on Optyczne.pl

At the beginning of 2006 it was reported for the first time that Tokina might launch an universal 17-135 mm lens. We wrote about it in the article „New Tokina lenses” (available only in Polish on Optyczne.pl). All models, announced at that time, have been launched but one - the 17-135 mm device exactly.

Everything was hushed up for a while but the issue resurfaced during the Photokina 2008 fair when a model with a bit wider focal lengths’ range - 16.5-135 mm - was exhibited on the Tokina stand. We also informed our Readers about it in the text „Tokina 16.5–135 mm – when are we going to see it?” (available only in Polish on Optyczne.pl). Contrary to our expectations the lens’s premiere took some time. The official announcement about its launch appeared only on 21 March 2009 and the lens wasn’t sold immediately afterwards - it hit the shelves in Japan only several months later. In Poland the first specimens found their way to shops at the beginning of 2010. To sum up 4 years passed from the first announcements to the moment the lens hit our shops’ shelves. Was it worth waiting so long? We hope the following test will answer this question.

We would like to thank RTV EURO AGD shop for lending the lens for our tests.
