The increased popularity of APS-C digital reflex cameras created a problem with standard lens. In small format analogue photography a standard lens meant an instrument with 50 mm focal length and 1.4-1.8 aperture. Connected to digital reflex cameras, though, these instruments have been used as just nice portrait lenses, nothing more.

If you want to have an equivalent of 50 mm lens on an APS-C sensor you must change into a lens with the focal length of 30 mm or so. The Sigma company dealt with this issue the fastest and perhaps making the most of noise – they advertised their 1.4/30 EX DC HSM lens as a perfect replacement for a classic 50 mm device.

The price of the Sigma 1.4/30 is not low so we decided to look for other instruments, also available on the market, with focal lengths ranging from 28 to 30 mm. As it happened we didn’t have to look far – Sigma offers a 1.8/28 mm lens which costs more or less the same than the 1.4/30 but it features an additional macro function, allowing you to take pictures from the distance of 20 cm with 1:2.9 magnification.

What’s more, because the usage of full frame sensors is becoming more and more widespread, a Sigma lens with a classic wide-angle 28 mm focal length can be a very attractive device for many people. You should take into account the fact that 24-70 mm or 28-70 mm zooms, often used on full frame, give you just f/2.8 aperture and here you get as much as f/1.8.

The instrument was lent for the tests by the Cyfrowe.pl shop.
