At the end of January 2006 the photographic community was electrified finding out that Sony was taking over the photographical division of Konica-Minolta. Sony had been in this line of business for a long time because of its quite popular digital compact cameras. Now it became obvious that the company would like to cut a slice from the digital reflex cameras’ market, supported by the Zeiss optics and the Konica-Minolta division.

We had to wait only a bit over four months. At the beginning of June Sony announced the launch of its new reflex camera called the Sony Alpha 100 and the whole range of lenses, under the names of Zeiss and Sony as well. Most of intermediate and high-end devices, though, were scheduled to be available not sooner than autumn and that’s why at the very beginning the Alpha 100 was sold with two lenses: the kit Sony DT 18-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 and the Sony 75-300 mm f/4.5-5.6, its supplement in the telephoto class. As Sony entered the market in a very strong and decisive way, supported by a powerful marketing campaign, we didn’t have to wait long for the results. The Alpha 100 aroused a lot of interest among potential customers and soon enough this camera found a lot of buyers. We decided to check what that interesting camera and added lenses are worth as Sony’s equipment might interest all owners of Konika-Minolta reflex cameras and lenses.

The first was sent to the front line the Sony 18-70 mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. What mechanical and optical quality does it offer? How does it compare with the Nikkors 18-70 and 18-55 mm and the Canon 18-55 mm? We will try to answer these questions and several others in the next chapters.

The lens was lent for the tests by the Cyfrowe.pl shop.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
