3. Build quality

Compared to the Canon 2.8/20, the tested Nikkor seems to be simply diminutive, although both devices aren’t big anyway. Such an effect is caused by the fact that the Nikkor is only 4.5 centimeters long – three centimeters smaller than the Canon! The photo below shows a comparison between the tested lens and two other Nikkors: the prime 2.8/24 and the 18-135 mm zoom which is added as a kit lens to the D80 camera.

The filigree dimensions of the Nikkor 2.8/20 don’t influence the build quality which is beyond reproach. The barrel is solid - you can’t find any cheap, low quality plastic in crucial places. Despite small dimensions the manual focus ring is comfortable and precise; the distance scale is quite clear, allowing you the necessary comfort of work.

When it comes to the inner construction, there are 12 elements positioned in 9 groups. The producer doesn’t boast about any special type of glass or special aspherical surfaces. Apart from that inside you can also find an aperture with 7 diaphragm blades, which can be closed down to f/22.
