8. Vignetting

The small Micro 4/3 sensor doesn’t create any problems when it comes to the vignetting even for lenses much faster than the tested Olympus 12-50 mm. We didn’t expect any serious problems here and, in fact, we didn’t see them.

In the case of JPEG files the vignetting is noticeable only at the widest angle of view. At the maximum relative aperture it is 28% (-0.94 EV). On stopping down the lens to the value of f/4.0 you see this aberration decrease to 25% (-0.84 EV). In the case of f/5.6 aperture you must take into account the fact that the brightness loss in the frame corners will be 18% (-0.58 EV) and by f/8.0 it will decrease to 14%. Further stopping down doesn’t have any measurable effect on the vignetting.

At longer focal lengths the vignetting is imperceptible even at the maximum relative aperture. In the middle of the focal range and at its longer end it amounts to just 7% (-0.20 EV).

When you pass to RAW files the vignetting values are higher but just for 12 mm focal length. At the maximum relative aperture the light fall-off in the corners reaches a significant value of 43% (-1.62 EV). What’s interesting, though, that aberration decreases very slowly on stopping down. By f/4.0, f/5.6, f/8.0 and f/11 it gets to respectively 42%, 41%, 39% and 38%.

As in the case of JPEG files the vignetting becomes imperceptible at longer focal lengths. In the middle of the range at the maximum relative aperture it is just 8% (-0.24 EV) and at 50 mm it reaches 9% at most (-0.28 EV).
