What’s interesting, the Nikkor 24-85 mm VR encounters the fewest problems with flares at the shortest focal length. Still you can catch light artifacts there even if the sun is situated far away from the frame (e.g. photo no. 6 below).

At longer focal lengths some distinct light streaks can be the most problematic – you can see them when a source of bright light is situated almost exactly in a frame corner. Fortunately in other positions the artifacts are far less pronounced.
