Canon EF 24 mm f/2.8 IS USM

10. Autofocus

The Canon EF 24 mm f/2.8 IS USM is equipped with an ultrasonic motor with an FTM (Full Time Manual) option. The work of the mechanism is indeed very quiet (still it cannot be called noiseless as you can hear the noticeable whirr) and fast. Running through the whole distance scale takes just about 0.5 of a second which is a very good result.

The mechanism is by and large infallible. A significant depth of field helps here undoubtedly but if the autofocus worked poorly there would be still some mistakes and we must say that in studio conditions the tested lens didn’t missed one single time.

The Canon 2.8/24 didn’t show any back or front focus tendency on any body used in the test (so the 50D and the 1 Ds MkIII)
