10. Autofocus

The Nikkor AF-S 18–35 mm f/3.5–4.5G ED was equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus motor SWM so the focusing mechanism is very silent. Still its speed, although not exactly slow, can hardly record-breaking either. Running through the whole distance scale takes about 0.8 of a second.

We don’t have any reservations concerning the accuracy of the autofocus. The average number of misses we noticed in studio conditions reached just 2.5% - it is a very good result. Still we couldn’t help but get the impression that the significant depth of field contributes greatly to the great autofocus performance, making small misses less painful. Taking photos of our testing charts we observed many times that the distance scale stopped every time in a different place despite the fact that the physical distance between the lens and the chart didn’t change at all.

Joining the tested lens with the Nikon D7000 didn’t cause any front or back focus tendency. When it cooperated with the D3x we managed to notice a slight tendency to choose the focus right before the photographed object. That effect was rather slight, though, and it disappeared when we started taking photos from greater distances.
