8. Vignetting

Like the distortion, the vignetting in JPEG files is corrected automatically. In order to see its real nature you have to measure it in RAW files as well. Thumbnails below show a comparison between the vignetting performance of different types of files at different aperture values.

Let’s start our presentation with the JPEG files results. You can spot no problems here – even at the maximum relative aperture the vignetting amounts to just 15% (−0.49 EV) and by f/4.0 it decreases to an imperceptible level of 4% (−0.11 EV).

The situation on RAW files, developed by an independent program such as dcraw is completely different. By f/2.8 you have to deal with a high level of vignetting which we determined as 48% (−1.86 EV). The aberration still remains distinct by f/4.0 as its value reaches 29% (-0.97 EV). A moderate level is only achievable by f/5.6 where the brightness loss in the frame corners amounts to 20% (-0.63 EV). Further stopping down of the relative aperture only slightly changes the situation. By f/8.0 and f/11.0 the vignetting is, respectively, 14% (−0.43 EV) and 11% (−0.37 EV).
