7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

The Fujinon XF 50–140 mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR corrects the coma in a splendid way as it can be noticed very clearly when looking at crops shown below. At all focal lengths the image of a diode positioned in the frame corner doesn’t have any obvious deformations - a performance beyond reproach.

Unfortunately the astigmatism is quite another story. The average distance between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values amounts to 8.8%, still looking quite well. Still if you divide the results into particular focal lengths you’ll find out that the lowest level of astigmatism is at 140 mm, a bit higher at 50 mm and the highest at 90 mm, where it exceeds 13%. For a lens such as the tested Fujinon it could be only described as huge.

We don’t have any reservations concerning the appearance of defocused images for a change. The circles of light look nice, without any local extremes. A rim a bit too distinct for our tastes can be seen on stopping down; that and seven diaphragm blades of the aperture, making full circularity of the aperture impossible, are the only flaws you can find. Still for just seven blades the situation is not entirely bad.
