Sony FE 85 mm f/1.4 GM

10. Autofocus

The autofocus mechanism of the Sony FE 1.4/85 GM is silent – you can hear only low whirr of the moving optical system. Still its speed doesn’t impress - running through the whole distance range and finding the focus takes about 0.9-1.0 of a second.

In a well-lit studio the autofocus didn’t cause us any problems; actually you can say it was performing sensationally well. After taking several dozen of photos of our testing chart by f/2.8 we found out the lens hit the target every single time (meaning the difference between the best MTF50 result and the worst one didn’t exceed 5%).

The bigger our surprise was when, during our outdoor session, the lens had to look for the proper focus position in quite strange circumstances. For instance it took several attempts to find a proper focus for the silhouette of my daughter, well-lit by the setting sun.

The lens didn’t have any clear front or back focus tendencies.
