Sigma A 85 mm f/1.4 DG HSM

9. Ghosting and flares

A huge front element set rather shallowly inside the casing and a complex optical construction featuring as many as 24 air-to-glass surfaces mean a big challenge concerning the performance against bright light. Despite that fact the tested Sigma manages to perform quite well. When the sun is positioned inside the frame you see some green ‘ghosts’; still after you move the sun closer to the corner their number doesn’t increase (sometimes some of them even disappear). However you can also notice a slight contrast decrease. If you position the source of bright light a bit outside the frame there are definitely less greenish artifacts but the decrease of contrast remains noticeable. Additionally in a specific position of the frame against the sun the image gets significantly lighter in one of the corners.

It is not a performance you should praise a lot but it would be difficult to criticize the Sigma in this category either. Our assessment can be placed near the middle of the scale. It is also one of few categories where the Sigma fares weaker than both more expensive Zeisses.
