5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

Photos below prove the Fujinon 2/50 has noticeable problems with the longitudinal chromatic aberration as it remains visible even on stopping down the aperture to f/2.8.

A noticeably better situation can be observed in case of the lateral chromatic aberration – the graph below shows the lens’s performance depending on aperture values while it was attached to two bodies we used in our test.

Fujifilm Fujinon XF 50 mm f/2 R WR - Chromatic and spherical aberration

It’s obvious the aberration decreases on stopping down; even at the maximum relative aperture, where its level is the highest, it shouldn’t cause you almost any problems. From f/4.0 onwards it becomes practically imperceptible.

Spherical aberration

It would be hard to notice any ‘focus shift’ effect while looking at first photos from this chapter. Additionally the circles of light we got in front of and behind the focus remain almost identical. It makes us think that, in case of this lens, spherical aberration is not a huge problem.
