Nikon Nikkor AF-S 85 mm f/1.4G

1. Introduction

Even two years ago the suggestions about refreshing the whole shorter prime lenses’ line-up were among wishes the most often made when it came to the launches of new Nikon instruments. True, Nikon had some problems there. Older classic devices didn’t feature their own autofocus motors and were powered by a device so-called “screwdriver”. The trouble was the simplest reflex cameras on the company’s offer lacked it. Their owners, buying such a “prime”, had to take into account the fact that they would set the focus manually. What’s more, old constructions faced more and more problems, struggling to keep up with sensors swelling more and more with megapixels.

Nikon decided to catch up and got down to work. Lately the company has presented the Nikkor AF-S DX 35 mm f/1.8G model, aimed at amateur photographers and designed for small sensors, the Nikkor AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G, a full frame classic, and the expensive, wide-angle Nikkor AF-S 24 mm f/1.4G ED aimed at professionals. The time came for other launches before the Photokina in September 2010. At that time the Nikkor AF-S 85 mm f/1.4G model, another lens with classic parameters, saw the light of day. Courtesy of the Nikon Poland company already several days after its official launch the lens found its way to our editorial office and because of that we can present its full test right now. Read on the next chapters to check it out!

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
