Sigma C 18-50 mm f/2.8 DC DN – first impressions and sample images

4. Summary

I admit I like the new Sigma launch very much. So far we haven't seen a small, lightweight, universal zoom with a fixed aperture of f/2.8 designed for mirrorless cameras and I think it's an advantage that Sigma managed to present it as the first. I trust that, after Sony E and L-mount, we'll see also a Canon EF-M version and, finally, Sigma will enter also the Fujifilm X system. In that system the new lens will be a very solid rival for the Fujinon XF 18-55 mm f/2.8-4 OIS, an instrument present on the market for almost a decade, especially that the suggested retail price of the new Sigma amounts to $550, so is not much higher than the price tag of the older Fujinon.

I admit I am a bit surprised that there is no Sigma C 18-50 mm version with the Micro 4/3 mount available at the very beginning. After all Sigma have been actively involved in work over that mount and the 18-50 mm range is an equivalent of the 36-100 mm range on full frame. With a fixed f/2.8 aperture these are very interesting parameters and, I suppose, many Olympus and Panasonic users would be interested in buying such an instrument.

Still I will assess the mount strategy of Sigma and the optical properties of the Sigma C 18-50 mm f/2.8 DC DN when I get hold of and test the final product properly – right now feel invited to read our full test as soon as it is published!
