4. Image resolution

The lens’ image resolution represented by the MTF50 function has been measured on Canon EOS 20D RAW files. The results for the middle and the side of the frame are shown in the picture below.

Not to mince matters, we can instantly state that Tokina’s performance in the middle of the frame is excellent. Even at maximum aperture, it produces outstandingly sharp images, the MTFs of which reach 42 lpmm. Having stopped down to F/4.0 and F/5.6, what we acquire is close to the record-breaking values of 45 lpmm. We like such results a lot!

Somewhat less astonishing is the side-of-the-frame performance. All because of the situation at maximum aperture. That’s where the MTFs fail to reach 30 lpmm, which is what we consider a decent level. Nevertheless, it is virtually the only flaw. Stopping down to F/4.0 lets us enjoy crisp images even at the corners of the frame.
