Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN – first impressions and sample shots

4. Summary

It's very difficult to write anything objective and biding about this lens. First of all we are really sad that distortion and vignetting are not properly corrected. We would be able to forgive such a flaw in a Contemporary line lens, with small dimensions and a sensible price as its priorities. However, in the case of Art instruments high image quality and the best correction of the majority of optical aberration usually count the most.

During the short period when we were able to handle and play with the pre-production model of the Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN we saw clearly that distortion and vignetting were too high but we didn't have enough time to check if/whether you get something instead.

Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG DN – first impressions and sample shots - Summary

According to the producers and MTF graphs that we've seen the new Sigma is supposed to offer you a much better image quality than its predecessor, especially on the edge of the frame. Our sample shots, taken in conditions that were far from perfect, couldn't allow us to judge whether it is indeed the case. We also have to wait for a production specimen of the lens to determine its MTF performance on our testing charts.

To be honest I can hardly wait for the full test of this lens; I would love to check the levels of all aberrations, including coma and astigmatism, that are supposed to be corrected much better, making this lens a more universal instrument, good for e.g. nighttime photos.

At the end we would like to add that the lens is supposed to hit the shelves in March 2023 and its suggested retail price will amount to $850.
