10. Autofocus

If you expect that an ultrasonic HSM motor means the autofocus of the new Sigma 18-200 mm is always very fast and silent, you might miscalculate a bit. Most of HSM motors are indeed noiseless but not this one. During the work you can hear a low, deep whirr. It is certainly not bothersome but you can’t call it noiseless either.

What’s more, the speed of the mechanism is hardly impressive. Running through the whole distance scale, no matter in what direction, takes less than one second. Taking into account the fact that the range of the focus ring amounts to only 40 degrees such a result is not something praiseworthy.

What about the efficiency of the autofocus? Here it would be difficult to complain because in studio conditions the lens missed in just 4% of cases. Additionally we didn’t observe any front or back focus tendencies either.
