A big front element, not sheltered by anything, and a very complex optical construction (as many as 32 air-to-glass surfaces!) means a huge challenge in this category. Our photos prove that much as well.
The flares are the most numerous and the most intensive when the sun is situated almost precisely in the frame corner; then you can catch big, distinct artifacts and the contrast loss is huge. Fortunately when the source of light is moved outside the frame corner the flares disappear and the contrast returns to normal.
To sum up, even though the Sigma’s performance is far from perfect, it still fares better than the Tamron 150-600 mm; mind you its task was more difficult because it features more optical elements and its front outer lens is bigger.
