10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic autofocus motor so the work of the focusing mechanism is really silent. We don’t have any reservations concerning the speed either – running through the whole distance range and focusing took about 0.5 of a second. It is a very good result.

With such wide angles of view the depth of field is so shallow that it is not a challenge of any kind for the focusing mechanism. Our accuracy assessment of the autofocus is high because the number of misses in the studio conditions reached only 4%. What’s interesting, all misses took place at 22 mm; at both ends of the focal range the lens was faultless.

We didn’t notice any distinct front or back focus tendencies either. A very slight front focus could be observed in photos from the EOS 5D MkIII but it was a negligible effect, noticeable only when you took photos of objects situated in a very small distance from the lens.
