Pros:
  • solid casing of good quality,
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • negligible lateral chromatic aberration,
  • not very bothersome distortion on the smaller sensor,
  • very efficient astigmatism correction,
  • practically invisible vignetting on the APS-C sensor,
  • silent, accurate and fast autofocus,
  • efficient image stabilization,
  • macro functionality.

Cons:

  • weak performance against bright light,
  • bothersome moustache distortion at the wide angle,
  • some problems related to spherical aberration,
  • noticeable vignetting on full frame.

After conducting a full testing procedure I admit I can see the point of such a lens as the Canon EF 24-70 mm f/4L IS USM much better and understand why it was launched on the market; still I have to say not all my doubts were successfully dispelled. If you compare the tested lens to the f/2.8 model you notice a much lower price tag, a better performance on the edge of the frame and optical stabilization as its advantages. Compared to the 24-105L there is a better performance on the edge of the frame, lower chromatic aberration and a better correction of vignetting. Unfortunately when you stack up the price and the possibilities of the tested lens against those of the 24-105L you have to admit the latter device seems to be a better investment. If only the 24-70 mm f/4L model managed to avoid serious slip-ups connected to moustache distortion and performance against bright light it would be a very strong rival of the 24-105L, especially with a price lower by several hundred PLN. In the current situation, though, I don’t think it can compete successfully; anyway personally I like the 24-105L much better.
