Astigmatism, understood as average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, reached 2.4%. It is a result which we qualify as very low. After switching on the teleconverter, so a movable part so to speak, the astigmatism level increases to 7.1%.

For a zoom lens the Nikkor 180-400 mm VR offers you very pleasant out-of-focus areas. We didn’t have any objections concerning the appearance of defocused circles of light, both in the standard set and after switching the teleconverter on. One thing is worth your attention: a noticeable truncation of the circle in the corner of full frame. It remains perfectly visible at 300 mm even after stopping down the aperture by 2 EV.
