5. Chromatic and spherical aberration

Chromatic aberration

Despite using as many as six low dispersion glass elements longitudinal chromatic aberration hasn’t been eliminated completely. In the photo below you see that out-of-focus images are a bit tinted. The problem is perhaps not serious or even medium but still a slight level of this aberration is noticeable.

The graph below allows you to assess how the Fujifilm optics specialists managed to correct lateral chromatic aberration.

In the 12-16 mm range there are no problems at all. The aberration is kept below 0.05% so it can be described as very low. You get a bit more chances to notice it at the shortest focal length but still you can hardly talk about problems. These values are low and they approach medium level only at the maximum relative aperture. In this category the tested lens should be assessed very high, especially as its task was very difficult. The rivals had many slip-ups in this category, for example the Sigma 8-16 mm f/4.5–5.6 DC HSM at 8 mm showed a level of 0.18%, and the Canon 11–24 mm f/4L USM at 11 mm even exceeded a high level of 0.2%.

Spherical aberration

A significant depth of field provided by the lens and its field curvature create a lot of problems when it comes to the assessment of the correction of spherical aberration. Images of out-of-focus light circles are so small that it would be difficult to draw any biding conclusions based on them. First photos of this chapter show a kind of shifting the focusing area toward bigger distances but significant depth of field and field curvature make it difficult to assess; perhaps it was the fault of spherical aberration, perhaps it was caused by other factors.
