8. Vignetting

Let’s check the vignetting performance with the tested lens while attached to the Sony A7R II working in the APS-C mode.

In the case of this type of detector there are no differences between RAW and JPEG formats. At the maximum relative aperture the brightness loss in the frame corners amounted to 48% (−1.89 EV). It is a high value, influenced by small physical dimensions of the lens. On stopping down the aperture to f/2.0 you can decrease the vignetting level to 31% (−1.08 EV). By f/2.8 it still gets to 25% (−0.83 EV), and by f/4.0 it reaches 19% (−0.60 EV). The problems with this aberration end completely by f/5.6 and f/8.0 where we got, respectively,14% (−0.43 EV) and 13% (−0.41 EV).

Having the full frame Sony A7R II camera at our disposal we could also check the image circle of the tested Sigma and whether it covers full frame. It doesn’t and thumbnails below show it also lacks a lot.
