6. Distortion

When working with the smaller sensor of the Canon 50D you don’t have to fear distortion at all. Its slight influence is visible at the 17 mm focal length where it reaches −1.34%. With the lengthening of the focal length the problems disappear completely because at 26 mm that aberration is just +0.12%, and at 35 mm it increases slightly to +0.36%.

More serious problems are experienced on full frame. At 17 mm you deal with a quite significant level of barrel deformations and our result amounted to −4.28%. In the middle of the focal range the distortion is negligible, getting to just +0.39%. At 35 mm it increases to +1.17% – hardly a bothersome level but certainly something easy to notice.

In this category the Tamron didn’t impress. For example the Tokina AT-X PRO FX SD 17–35 mm f/4 (IF) fared better on both ends of focal range.
