10. Autofocus

The tested lens is equipped with an ultrasonic HSM motor so its performance is noiseless. When it comes to speed it's hardly impressive. Employing standard settings, the lens attached to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III focused as fast as about 0.8-0.9 of a second – that's how long it took to run through the whole distance range and confirm the focus, no matter what focal length was used. It seems that the lens was a tad quicker running from infinity to 1.2 meters than the other way round.

Of course if you employ the shortened range, from 3 meters to infinity, the lens is noticeably quicker and its focusing time amounts to about 0.4 of a second.

The quality of performance and focusing times don't noticeably change after attaching the Sigma to the older Canon EOS 50D.

It's worth adding that the speed of the focusing mechanism and its range can be adjusted after connecting the lens to the USB Dock.

The accuracy of the focusing was quite high, both during our studio session and while shooting outdoors. We got not more than 2% of misses, a very good result. The tested lens also didn't have any visible problems with front or back focus, no matter what camera body it was attached to.
