Pros:

  • shapely, sealed casing made mostly of metal,
  • excellent image quality in the frame centre,
  • very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
  • good image quality on the edge of full frame,
  • lack of problems with spherical aberration,
  • negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • moderate lateral chromatic aberration,
  • low distortion,
  • slight vignetting on the small APS-C sensor,
  • excellent coma correction,
  • low astigmatism,
  • silent and accurate autofocus,
  • quite nice out-of-focus areas,
  • efficient optical stabilization.

Cons:

  • significant vignetting on full frame near the maximum relative aperture,
  • performance against bright light could have been better,
  • slow autofocus.
After comparing the length of the pros and cons lists you know our assessment must be rather positive. To be honest the flaws we managed to find are not essential if you use the lens as it is supposed to be used. In macro photography you often close down the aperture significantly so vignetting stops being a serious problem. You also rarely put the sun in one corner of the frame and you often work in the manual focusing mode. In areas important for macro photography, such as image resolution or the correction of basic optical aberrations, the performance of the lens remains excellent. In fact the only thing we could carp about is the price, notably higher than the prices of the rivals which fare equally well.
