10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the tested lens is noiseless but not especially fast. Typically, running through the whole distance and confirming the focus takes about 1 second. That time might vary from shot to shot even if the conditions remain roughly the same. The lens might waver at the begining and then waver again near the proper focus position which, of course, makes the focusing time longer. That time also depends on the size of the AF point you employ. We noticed that with the smallest point there was more focus hunting and wavering, even if you chose a pretty contrasted object. I trust we will see new software version soon because there is clearly a lot of room for improvement. The tested Sigma lags behind not only brand name devices but even several Samyangs I've had an opportunity to test with the help of the Sony A7R II.

Still we didn't notice any accuracy problems – the number of evident misses was very slight and the lens's performance wasn't problematic, no matter whether we worked in the studio or outside.

Additionally the lens didn't have any distinct front or back focus tendencies.
