Standard 50 mm class lenses most often show barrel distortion; the best of them have results near −0.50%, in the case of the worst distortion might even reach−1.50%. There was one exception to this rule in the FE system - it featured pincushion variant of distortion and that aberration was really pronounced, especially taking into account parameters of the lens. We think here of the Zeiss Sonnar 1.8/55 and its result of +1.48%.

The Sigma C 45 mm f/2.8 DG DN has a shorter focal length and a wider angle of view than classic 50 mm lenses and it made us expect barrel distortion even more. Meanwhile the tested lens, like the Sonnar with a longer focal length, shows 'pincushion' deformations. They would be difficult to notice on the APS-C sensor, as their value amounts to just +0.20% but on full frame you get a better chance to observe it, with distortion increasing to +1.09%. Still, when it comes to absolute values, it is not something that diverges significantly from a typical performance in this category.
