Voigtlander Nokton 50 mm f/1.2 Aspherical

7. Coma, astigmatism and bokeh

Coma could be pretty severe in case of optically simple 1.4/50 class lenses. Taking into account the fact that the Nokton features a superior aperture fastness we really didn't expect any miracles in this category. And indeed, we were right. There is just one consolation: coma remains quite harmless on the smaller APS-C sensor. Unfortunately, in the corners of full frame it becomes quite distinct, seriously influencing the performance in the frame corners in a negative way. Another piece of bad news: coma remains visible even on stopping down the aperture by 1 EV.

Astigmatism, understood as an average difference between horizontal and vertical MTF50 function values, amounted to 14%. It is a result which we still consider to be medium but it contributes to worsening of image quality for sure.

Defocused circles of light look pretty well with even light spread, not perfect in some places but still acceptable. A lighter rim is weak and appears only on more significant stopping down. Mechanical vignetting is visible at the maximum relative aperture and on stopping down by 1 EV but later on it ceases to be a problem.
