The following chart presents a comparison between basic parameters of the tested lens and other instruments of this class, designed for APS-C sensor. The tested lens is physically the lightest and the smallest in this group; also, together with its XF series brother, it offers you the narrowest filter diameter.

Dimensions of the Fujinon XC35 mm f/2 could be properly assessed by examining the photo below, where it is positioned between two other lenses with similar focal lengths: the Sigma C 30 mm f/1.4 DG DN on the left and the Fujinon XF 35 mm f/1.4R on the right.

The tested lens starts with a mount made of plastics.The mount surrounds contacts and a rear element, 23 mm in diameter, which doesn't move. That element is positioned in a black, well-matted case that sticks out over the contact plate a bit. From the side of the mount everything looks as it should: all the parts seem to be properly sealed, they are well-matted and black.

The proper barrel of the lens starts with a smooth, black ring made of plastics, 19 mm wide. On the ring you can find a focal length marking and a red square, making an alignment with a camera easier. On the opposite side you see a sticker with the name and parameters of the lens, its serial number and information that it was made in the Philippines.

The biggest part of the lens is a manual focus ring, 23 mm wide, completely covered by fine ribbing. There is no distance or depth of field scale available. The ring is a focus-by-wire design and its focus throw amounts to a value of about 360 degrees. It's a lot and it ensures you a very high precision of settings. Still, you have to mention the fact that these 360 degrees don't spread out evenly over the whole distance scale. First 180 degrees cover just a distance from the minimum focus to 1 meter and the next 180 degrees are needed to go from 1 meter to infinity. The ring is properly damped and turns pretty smoothly too.

The lens ends with a narrow ring with a hood mount. That mount goes round a non-rotating filter thread, 43 mm in diameter; inside you can find a part of the casing with the name and parameters of the lens. The front element, 25 mm in diameter, doesn't move and is slightly hidden in the barrel.

The Fujinon XC 35 mm f/2 is a low-budget lens but you can notice that only when it comes to used materials because the device is made mainly of plastics. Still it's worth mentioning the fact that we didn't notice any other visible shortcuts, slip-ups, or flaws, often a result of strict economizing.

When it comes to optical construction you deal here with nine elements positioned in six groups. Two elements are aspherical in shape; inside you can also find an aperture with nine rounded blades which can be closed down to a value of f/16 at the maximum. As you can see that description is almost identical with the description of the Fujinon XF 35 mm f/2R WR. It's really hard to say whether these two optical constructions are the same; anyway we couldn't find a precise diagram of the XC model on the site of the producer in order to prove or disprove our theory. We are aware that, even if the shape and number of elements remain the same, differences in coatings, barrel construction, blackening, and mechanical vignetting might influence the results of the test in a significant way. What's more, the XF 35 mm f/2R WR model was still tested on the Fujifilm X-E1 camera; it would be worth checking how a similar optical construction deals with a more pixel-packed sensor of the X-T2.
