10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the tested Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45 mm f/4.0 PRO is noiseless and very quick. Running through the whole distance range and confirming the focus takes just 0.3-0.4 of a second which is an excellent value, especially if you take into account the fact that you deal here with a macro functionality substitute so the necessity of serving also the shorter distances. What's more, the focusing mechanism is free of focus hunting tendencies, it doesn't waver even in weaker lighting conditions.

Autofocus mechanisms featured in different Olympus cameras and lenses are a joy to use, easily one of the nicer combinations available for testing purposes. Of course a significant depth of field, connected to the smaller Four-Thirds sensor, helps a bit but, nevertheless, we quite often assess their accuracy very positively indeed. The Olympus 12-45 mm is not an exception to that rule. No matter whether you use it in the studio or outdoor, it rarely misses, locking on the subject quickly and accurately, with over 99% of photos being as sharp as you wish.

In photos, shown below, it might seem that depth of field is not symetrically spread around the zero point but it's not a problem whatsoever and doesn't necessarily mean that the autofocus made a mistake. First of all, these photos are taken near the minium focusing distance so in the most difficult combination. Still the proper object remains sharp. It shows that, during an ordinary performance, the lens doesn't need any autofocus calibration.
