1. Introduction

Nikon Corporation started to build their Z full frame system mainly with fixed focal f/1.8 lenses. First, in August 2018, the 1.8/35 and the 1.8/50 models were released; in July 2019 they added to that group the 1.8/85 and a bit later, in September 2019, the wide-angle 1.8/24. Finally, in February 2020, the Nikkor Z 20 mm f/1.8 S was launched. The following chart presents a comparison between basic parameters of all these optical instruments.

You can notice at once that the Nikkor 1.8/20 is optically the most complex lens in this group; it also remains physically the heaviest and it comes with the bigger filter diameter. Will all these features allow it to reach good image quality both in the frame centre and on its edge, a very demanding requirement with such angles of view? Let's find out in the following chapters.

Courtesy of the Nikon company we have been sent one specimen of that lens for testing purposes and now we can invite you, dear Readers, to find out how it fared in our tests – enjoy your reading!
