6. Distortion and field of view
Field of view
A rectilinear 135 mm lens on full frame should provide an angle of view amounting to 18.21 degrees. In their specifications Nikon states a bit lower value, that of 18 degrees and 10 minutes of arc, so 18.17 degrees. We decided to take a reality check. In order to do that we took photos of the starry sky and saved them as uncorrected JPEG files.Then we transformed the pixel layout (X,Y) from the photo into the equatorial coordinate system (right ascension and declination), which locates a star on a celestial sphere. That way we could determine the field of view of the lens with utter precision and in the right way, so for rays of light coming from infinity.
Our transformation was based on positions of 73 stars spread evenly across the frame. An average mesh-fitting error of the coordinates amounted to just 5 seconds of arc. Our result of 18.30 degrees, with the measuring error on a level of 0.03 of a degree, is a bit higher than official values stated by the producers but the difference is really slight.
Distortion
In case of the smaller APS-C/DX sensor the geometric deformations are completely negligible. Our official results amounting to +0.40% is very close to zero.

On full frame pincushion distortion is a bit higher - we deal here with a value of +0.83% but still it is not a level you can complain about. Of course we should mention the fact that in this category the Nikkor lost the duel with its two direct rivals, tested by us earlier. The Sony FE 135 mm f/1.8 GM showed a level of +0.65% and the Samyang AF 135 mm f/1.8 FE put to shame both of its renowned competitors with a splendid result reaching just +0.30%.
