When it comes to macro photography lenses, the Canon’s offer is more modest than e.g. the offer of Sigma. It doesn’t mean, though, that we have no choice at all. For full frame bodies you can use a Canon 50 mm f/2.5 EF Macro, a Canon 100 mm f/2.8 EF USM Macro and a Canon 180 mm f/3.5L EF USM Macro. The first lens has a 1:2 mapping scale and the last will cost you an arm and a leg. For most of us in reality there is only the 100 mm lens left on the battlefield – it offers you a 1:1 scale and it won’t ruin you financially.

That lens was launched in 2000 substituting its predecessor which lacked an USM motor and internal focusing. Seven years in the digital photography is an epoch so it’s perhaps worth testing how it operates on contemporary reflex cameras.
