10. Autofocus
The lack of ultrasonics can be heard immediately – the mechanism works with a pronounced buzz. Perhaps it is not especially annoying but in the era of omnipresent ultrasonic motors which are put even into kit lenses, it is very noticeable. The speed of the mechanism is also rather low- here the lack of the distance scale limiter makes itself felt very keenly. Running through the whole scale takes the lens as long as two seconds.
When it comes to the accuracy the lens can’t be praised either. In studio conditions it missed in 14% of shots. Such a result, taking into account the good autofocus of the testing body, is weak. In the picture below, presenting five crops of our autofocus testing chart taken from five consecutive photos, you can see how bad it is in practice. The camera always aimed at the same spot only it was refocused before every photo. The lack of the mechanism’s repeatability is evident.

That lack of repeatability is not additionally loaded by any back or front focus tendency – this is the only good piece of news here. If the lens misses it will front focus and back focus equally often.
