1. Introduction

In times of reflex camera systems, Nikon had never had a 35 mm f/1.2 lens in their lineup. It was caused by problems with designing such an instrument with a mount that is only 44 mm wide and has to accommodate also some place for a mirror chamber.

Nikon Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.2 S - Introduction

In case of the full frame Nikon Z system, the diameter of the mount is increased to 55 mm and it makes it a lot easier to design lenses faster than f/1.4 and for many focal length values.

Despite that fact, we had to wait as long as seven years for a really fast 35 mm Nikon device because the company focused on launching slower models. In 2018, when the new system was launched, they showed the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.8 S, and in June 2024 the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.4 was released.

Nikon Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.2 S - Introduction

Finally, in February 2025, Nikon decided to launch a really fast 35 mm instrument and they presented the Nikkor Z 35 mm f/1.2 S with impressive dimensions and significant weight.

As we have already tested two slower 35 mm Nikon lenses, we decided to check the 1.2/35 model as well. Courtesy of Nikon Polska, we managed to borrow one specimen of this lens for testing purposes – thank you very much!
