1. Introduction

In 2003 Canon showed a truly unique lens at that time, the EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM, an instrument combining an ultra wide angle of view and an almost standard device.

Constructing a combination of ultra wide angle of view with a classic 50 mm standard took as long as until 2020, when the Panasonic Lumix S 20-60 mm f/3.5-5.6 was launched. Not long afterwards, in 2023, Sony went one step further, with a release of the FE 20-70 mm f/4 G.

To be honest I thought the further development of this segment would mean small steps toward bigger focal lengths, for example the next model might be something like 20-80 or 20-90 mm.

I admit I underestimated the courage and innovation of the Japanese Sigma company. They decided to enter this part of the market in a forceful way and in September 2025 they presented the full frame Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG, combining not only an ultra wide angle of view with the standard but also adding a quite solid telephoto lens to the bunch.

Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG - Introduction

This move made one of my most serious arguments against the idea of super or hiperzoom devices void. These theoretically universal lenses were able to provide the widest angle of view possible of about 80 deg. For me personally it meant that I would have to take with myself another lens anyway because I admit I can't imagine a photographic trip without an instrument that is able to provide an angle of view of about100 deg at least. If I had to carry along two lenses anyway and exchange one for the other quite often, I'd rather take three of them; by doing so I wouldn't be forced to tolerate a lot of compromises any superzoom lens entails.

Now, with the Sigma 20-200 mm, you can enjoy angles of view starting from about 95 deg and ending with 12 deg. Such a range allows you to cover the needs of practically any photographic trip without taking other lenses with you.

Of course I had no doubt that such unique parameters housed in a barrel with very sensible physical dimensions, would mean a lot of compromises. I hope our test is going to answer whether these compromises are meaningful or rather something you might ignore. What are you going to get in return? Next chapters are going to guide you through the performance of the Sigma C 20-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 DG – enjoy!

We would like to thank K-Consult, the official Sigma distributor for Poland, for lending us one specimen of this lens for testing purposes.
