Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II

1. Introduction

At the beginning of 2011, along with launches of new reflex cameras, a new kit lens was shown as well - we think here about the EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II model, equipped with optical image stabilization, which is supposed to accompany the simplest reflex camera in the Canon line-up so the 1100D.

The appearance of the new lens, compared to its predecessor, differs noticeably. On closer inspection you can find out that we deal here mainly with the effects of cost-cutting exercise – the new casing looks simply like a cheaper version of the old lens. When it comes to parameters, nothing changed. The optical construction seems to remain the same although the producer did mention something about newer and better coatings and more efficient stabilization.

As the Canon EF-S 18–55 mm f/3.5–5.6 IS II has a chance to become one of the most popular lenses on the market we decided to conduct a full test. We would like to thank the Canon Poland company for lending us the lens for testing purposes.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
