Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM

1. Introduction

Years 2013-2014 have seen a fine crop of new and expensive 50 mm f/1.4 lenses. The trend was started by Zeiss as they launched two devices: the first was the Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50 mm f/1.4 ZA SSM, co-produced with Sony, and then the manual Zeiss Otus 55 mm f/1.4 ZE/ZF.2, designed for Canon and Nikon reflex cameras. Nikon also had something to show, launching the Nikkor AF-S 58 mm f/1.4G. Finally in January 2014 Sigma announced their own lens, the Sigma A 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM.

We admired the Zeiss Otus but we were disappointed by the Nikkor 1.4/58 completely. How the Sigma will fare in our test? In order to find out check the following chapters – happy reading!

We would like to thank the Sigma ProCentrum company as they were kind enough to borrow us the lens for testing purposes.
