10. Autofocus

The autofocus of the tested lens combined with both A7R II and A7R III is very silent. You should also praise its speed in both cases. With the lens attached to the A7R II at the shorter end of the focal spectrum running through the whole distance range and confirming the focus took just about 0.3 of a second so was really flash quick. When we passed to the longer focal lengths, ranging from 70 to 105 mm, that result increased a bit but only slightly, to about 0.4-0.6 of a second. Both are very good values.

When the lens was attached to the newer body, the A7R III, everything was even more efficient, and focusing times even shorter. Focus play and wavering, sporadic at worst in the case of the A7R II, now simply disappear – a round of applause!

We also didn't have any serious reservations concerning the accuracy of the mechanism – while shooting both in our studio and in the open air the number of misses never exceeded 2-3%.

As you can see in the photos below, the Sony didn't have any problems with front or back focus either.
