1. Introduction

When in 2013 Sigma started to release their full frame, fast Art line lenses they were very methodical, offering at first the most classic parameters. The A 35 mm f/1.4 DG HSM was shown at the beginning, the A 50 mm f/1.4 DG HSM the next year and the A 24 mm f/1.4 DG HSM two years later. Many fans have expected the 1.4/85 to be the next one but the company decided to offer the unique 1.4/20 first, and the classic 85 mm a tad later.

Three years passed and the Sigma new system boasted five Art devices as fast as f/1.4 with focal lengths from 20 to 85 mm. In the following chart you can find a presentation of basic properties of these lenses. It's also worth adding that, after some time, we were also shown the 14 mm and the 135 mm models but these were a bit slower, with an aperture of f/1.8. Then the company released several f/1.4 prime lenses with focal lengths amounting to 105, 28, and 40 mm.

The system of fast Art instruments designed for full frame mirrorless cameras, started in a different way. First, in July 2019, the A 35 mm f/1.2 DG DN was shown; one year later we saw the A 85 mm f/1.4 DG DN, and then once again a 35 mm device, this time as fast as f/1.4. Customers had to wait over one year for the next release in this segment but then Sigma presented two lenses at once, namely the 1.4/20 and the 1.4/24 – their properties are shown in the next chart.

Still we had been wondering how long we would have to wait for the most classic of classics so the 1.4/50 model. Finally its release was anounced in February 2023. Courtesy of K-Consult, the official Sigma representative for Poland, we also were given an opportunity to handle it before the official launch as we were sent a pre-production specimen. That allowed us to present our hands-on impressions and a gallery of sample shots- enjoy!
