A big and convex front element is a huge challenge when it comes to the performance against bright light. Even a built-in hood doesn’t shelter it completely from the side light. We didn’t expect any miracles here, even though Tamron boasted of excellent protective coatings.
Indeed there are a lot of flares. What’s interesting, it is easier to catch them on the smaller sensor; on the bigger one the vignetting helps to damp them down. The fact that you can catch ugly, bright artifacts at the longer focal lengths even when the sun is situated far away from the frame is really worrisome.
As you can guess our assessment cannot be positive; still we might add that the Nikkor 14-24 mm could catch nasty, greenish reflections within the frame as well and the Canon 16-35 wasn’t free of that affliction either, despite the fact that its front element is a lot smaller.
