11. Summary

Pros:

  • Solid, metal casing,
  • Sensational image quality in the frame centre,
  • Good image quality on the edge of APS-C,
  • Imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration,
  • Low lateral chromatic aberration,
  • Lack of any distinct problems with spherical aberration,
  • Very low astigmatism,
  • Sensibly looking out-of-focus areas for this angle of view.

Cons:

  • High vignetting on full frame,
  • Coma could have been lower.
The mere fact that the Tokina has been the sharpest lens tested by us on the Sony A7R II so far proves that you deal here with a fine optical instrument. We could have ended our summary in that place and simply recommend the purchase of the tested lens.

Still we would like to add that the Tokina was a joy to use and the lack of autofocus wasn’t bothersome even for people who are used to automatic focusing. Our biggest reservation concerns the vignetting. Its level is high and it doesn’t decrease quickly on stopping down the aperture. Still such is the trait of wide angle lenses attached to full frame mirrorless cameras. Their producers speak loudly about merits of getting rid of the mirror but they skip the part with telecentricity issues and they mean more problems with sharpness and vignetting on edges of a big sensor. It’s simply a price any such lens has to pay and the Tokina is not an exception to that rule. It’s not entirely its fault, it’s the specificity of the system.
