1. Introduction

At the beginning of February 2024 Optyczne.pl published my article about bird photography for beginners, in which I shared my 20-year-long experience concerning that area. In that article I tried to prove that you don't necessarily have to spend a fortune to enjoy that kind of hobby.

In one part of that article I wrote that, so far, none of the producers had offered a lightweight and handy 5.6/500 lens for mirrorless systems users and I expressed my regret. I didn't even know that I hit the bull's eye with my remark. Imagine that the same month, on 21st of February 2024, Sigma announced the launch of the S 500 mm f/5.6 DG DN OS model, a lens just 235 mm long, and weighing less than 1.4 kilos.

Hearing such a piece of news I really had no choice: I asked K-Consult, a Sigma distributor for Poland, to lend me one specimen of that lens for testing purposes. The company reacted very fast, and the results of my testing present the following chapters – enjoy your reading!
