Getting down to the facts right away we can say that the situation in the frame centre is splendid. In fact, in the crucial range of apertures and at all focal lengths, the tested lens either brushes against the level of 40 lpmm or exceeds it significantly. Such a performance is indeed worth the L-lenses renown. One little crisis can be noticed in the case of the maximum relative aperture/maximum focal length combination but even there the level of 36 lpmm can be only described as very good. We take our hat off!

How does the lens perform at the frame edge? Some users carp a bit about the image quality in the corners on a Canon 5D. In the case of a 20D with a smaller APS-C sensor there are no problems, though. In the 24-40 mm focal length range and at all apertures the situation is once again excellent. At longer focal lengths it is worse but still the MTF50 values can be considered good.
