1. Introduction

Wide-angle lens, able to provide an field of view of 100 degrees, constitute a very important part of the optical market. Practically every manufacturer offers such devices for APS-C/DX sensors but in the majority of cases these are zoom lenses with quite average aperture fastness. Such instruments as the Tokina 11-16 mm f/2.8 and the Sigma 10-20 mm f/3.5 are exception to that rule - the first one is fast and the second one has a wider focal range. Still none of them provides the combination of 10 mm focal length and f/2.8 aperture.

Samyang decided to fill in that gap. They launched their lens in installments so to speak. The first official information about a 2.8/10 model appeared in September 2012. We were shown a lens with a big, convex front element, not protected by anything, and a screw-in hood, added in the box.

However, the lens didn’t go on sale at that time. Unofficially it was said the producer wanted to improve it by adding a possibility of attaching filters to it. After a year and a half finally Samyang informed about the new lens hitting the shelves. The improved model differs from its prototype in having a hood fixed permanently but still you can’t attach any filters to it.

We would like to thank the Delta company, the sole distributor of Samyang lenses in Poland, for lending us one specimen for testing purposes.

You are also invited to get acquainted with our test procedure, described in the article "How do we test lenses?" If you feel it’s still not enough, please go to our FAQ section where you can find some further explanation.
